Chapter 01
Pricing & plans
Tiers, word limits, refunds, and how to switch.
5 answers
- JustVoice has three tiers: Free ($0/mo, 5,000 words), Plus ($5/mo, 50,000 words plus unlimited dictionary and snippets), and Pro ($9/mo, unlimited words plus code mode, app profiles, and cloud sync). Full breakdown is on the pricing page.
- Yes. The Free tier gives you local Whisper transcription on macOS, 5,000 words per month, the rule-based cleanup processor, sound effects, 10 snippets, and a 20-entry custom vocabulary. No credit card is needed to sign up.
- Plus ($5/mo) raises your monthly word limit to 50,000, unlocks an unlimited custom dictionary, and unlimited snippets.
- Pro ($9/mo) adds unlimited words per month, code dictation mode with IDE detection, per-app profiles, optional cloud sync between Macs, and unlimited note history.
- If JustVoice does not work for you, email justvoiceapp@gmail.com within 14 days of purchase and we will refund the most recent month. We would rather have a happy non-customer than an unhappy paying one.
Chapter 02
Privacy & local processing
How audio is handled, cloud sync, and offline mode.
5 answers
- Yes. Audio is transcribed locally on your Mac using OpenAI Whisper running through whisper.cpp on Apple Metal. Nothing is uploaded. The only network calls JustVoice makes are license checks and optional cloud sync if you turn it on (Pro).
- Audio processing happens entirely on your device. Recording is never streamed to a JustVoice server. The Whisper model runs locally with GPU acceleration via Apple Metal. Audio buffers are discarded as soon as transcription finishes.
- Only if you opt into cloud sync (Pro). When enabled, your notes sync to your Supabase storage so they appear on other Macs you sign into. By default, everything stays on your device.
- JustVoice is local-first and does not transmit audio, which is the strongest privacy posture for healthcare contexts. If you enable Pro cloud sync, transcripts are stored in Supabase, so any HIPAA workflow would need to factor that in. Keep cloud sync off for protected health information.
- Mostly yes. Local Whisper transcription, snippets, custom vocabulary, the rule-based cleanup processor, and your local note history all work offline. The app does periodic license checks (you can be offline for several days). Cloud sync requires internet by definition.
Chapter 03
Features
Custom vocabulary, snippets, code mode, languages.
6 answers
- JustVoice uses modern OpenAI Whisper models that handle longer phrases, technical jargon, and accents far better than the legacy macOS dictation engine. It also adds custom vocabulary, snippets, code dictation mode, per-app profiles, and a notes history. Built-in Mac dictation does none of those.
- Yes. Add words, names, acronyms, and technical terms to the custom dictionary and JustVoice biases the language model toward them. Free includes 20 entries; Plus and Pro are unlimited.
- Snippets are voice-triggered text expansions. Say a trigger phrase like "email signature" and JustVoice pastes a longer block of text. Free includes 10 snippets; Plus and Pro are unlimited. Useful for boilerplate, repeated greetings, code patterns, and form responses.
- Code mode (Pro) detects when you are inside an IDE or terminal and adapts cleanup. Symbols stay symbols, casing is preserved, and spoken commands like "newline" or "open paren" expand to the literal characters. Pairs well with Cursor, VS Code, JetBrains IDEs, Xcode, and Terminal-based AI tools like Claude Code.
- Yes. JustVoice supports 90+ languages through OpenAI Whisper. Larger models (medium, large) generally produce better non-English transcription. You can switch language per session or set a default in settings.
- Yes, JustVoice can run Whisper over an existing recording (WAV, MP3, M4A, OGG, FLAC, WebM). For very long episodes, dedicated batch tools like MacWhisper are still faster.
Chapter 04
Compatibility
macOS versions, Apple Silicon vs Intel, supported apps.
4 answers
- JustVoice requires macOS 13 (Ventura) or later. Sonoma, Sequoia, and Tahoe are fully supported and tested on every release.
- Yes, JustVoice ships a universal binary that runs natively on Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3, M4) and on Intel Macs. Apple Silicon is significantly faster for Whisper inference because Metal GPU acceleration is more efficient on the unified memory architecture.
- Not yet. JustVoice is macOS-only today. We use macOS-specific APIs (Accessibility, Core Audio, Metal) that would need to be rewritten for other platforms. There is no firm timeline for Windows or Linux.
- Any macOS app with a focused text input. That includes browsers (Chrome, Safari, Arc, Brave), editors (VS Code, Cursor, Xcode, JetBrains, Zed), terminals (Terminal.app, iTerm, Warp, Ghostty), note apps (Notion, Apple Notes, Bear, Obsidian), chat tools (Slack, Discord, Messages), email clients, and AI prompt UIs (ChatGPT, Claude.ai, Perplexity).
Chapter 05
Comparisons
How JustVoice stacks up against other dictation apps.
4 answers
- Wispr Flow is cloud-based, your audio is transmitted to its servers for processing. JustVoice is local-first, Whisper runs on your Mac and audio never leaves the device by default. Pricing also differs: Wispr Flow is $12/mo, JustVoice Plus is $5/mo and Pro is $9/mo. See our Wispr Flow comparison for a full breakdown.
- Both are local-first Mac apps using Whisper. JustVoice focuses more on developer workflows (code mode, IDE detection, snippets, custom vocabulary) and offers tighter Stripe-based subscription tiers. Superwhisper is a paid one-time-license model. Either is a strong privacy-respecting choice.
- Apple Dictation is the legacy built-in macOS feature. It is free but uses an older speech engine that struggles with technical terms, longer phrases, and many accents. JustVoice uses modern OpenAI Whisper models with much better accuracy, plus features Apple Dictation does not have: custom vocabulary, snippets, code mode, multi-language switching, and a notes history.
- No, that's a common misspelling. The product is Wispr Flow (no H, single P). It is an alternative voice dictation app from Wispr AI. JustVoice is a more privacy-respecting and lower-priced alternative; see our Wispr Flow comparison page for the details.
Chapter 06
Account & billing
Stripe, taxes, switching plans, receipts.
4 answers
- Sign in at justvoice.ai/dashboard, open your subscription, and choose a different tier. Upgrades take effect immediately and you are charged the prorated difference. Downgrades take effect at the end of the current billing period.
- From the dashboard, click "Manage subscription" and you will be sent to the Stripe billing portal where you can cancel in one click. Your plan stays active until the end of the period you have already paid for.
- Stripe automatically calculates and charges sales tax / VAT based on your billing country. The amount appears on your invoice from Stripe.
- Stripe emails a receipt for every charge to the email on your account. You can download invoices any time from the Stripe billing portal linked in your JustVoice dashboard.
Chapter 07
Troubleshooting
Hotkey conflicts, accessibility permission, model crashes.
3 answers
- First, confirm JustVoice has Accessibility permission in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility. Without it, the hotkey listener cannot capture global key events. Then check the hotkey is not bound to another app (Spotlight, Raycast, Karabiner). If the menu bar icon is dim, JustVoice may have lost permission after a system update, re-grant it.
- macOS sometimes invalidates the TCC (Transparency, Consent, Control) entry after app updates. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility, remove JustVoice with the minus button, then re-add it. Restart JustVoice. Versions 1.1.17 and later detect and surface this state with clearer guidance.
- Usually this is low memory or a corrupted model download. Open Settings → Models, delete the offending model, and re-download. Try a smaller model (small.en or distil-small) if you are on an older Mac with less RAM. If crashes persist, send a diagnostic log from the Help menu.
